In this final concert of the KC Baroque season we'll hear the voice of female composers whose music has been overlooked, undervalued, and in some cases silenced. The opportunities for women in the 17th century were most often limited to traditional roles of family life or the convent. Within the convent, women were free to compose, sing, and play, and much of their writing is for the church. Outside the convent, a few fortunate women received support from fathers or other supportive male figures that helped elevate their voice and their music. But even contemporary musicology, more than 400 hundred years later, has only just begun to lift the veil of obscurity that has rested over the works of these female composers. Music of Barbara Strozzi, Francesca Caccini, Isabella Leonarda, and Élizabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre will be featured along with the latest addition to our New Works for Old Instruments Commissioning Program: the premiere of "But A Day" by Ingrid Stölzel!
